What duties will I be expected to perform?
Once you have been accepted by a general vote of the membership at a monthly meeting, approved by the Board of Fire Commissioners, and have passed your physical and background check there are several things that will happen.
First, you will be issued gear, a pager and other necessary safety equipment to complete your job safely. Second, you will be assigned a station and given a mentor to assist you with becoming familiar with the station and fire department operations. At this point, you will be allowed to ride along with the department to various emergencies to observe and help out where your level of training allows. Within one (1) year, you must complete one of the required state training classes as described in the District BOPs, depending on your physical clearance.
How much time do I need to be available?
Our members all have very different lives and schedules. We understand that due to work and family obligations that there will be drills, calls and other events that you cannot make. We simply ask our members to make as many company events as possible while maintaining a call response percentage of 10% and a yearly point total of 50. Some of our members work two jobs and many are in College as well as working full time jobs and successfully receive their 50 point minimum each year.
It takes dedication, drive and many hours of technical training to become a firefighter or support personnel. If you’re willing to put in the time and effort, and meet the minimum requirements listed above, The East Greenbush Fire Company is the place for you.
